The Morgan Motor Company will unveil the Morgan Aero Coupe at the Geneva Motor Show next week.
The Aero Coupe is a two-seater sports car inspired by the Morgan’s successful GT3 Aero endurance racer that achieved a number of race victories. It’s powered by a BMW 4.8-litre V8 engine, which develops 270kW of power and 490Nm of torque.
Unlike most of its traditional Morgan siblings, the Aero Coupe has a fixed roof layout and is constructed entirely of aluminium employing old school rivets with structural bonding. Even the chassis is aluminium which supports the powertrain.
Much of the car is hand built with all individual alloy parts formed from tooling and hand assembled.
Standard equipment will be a six-speed automatic transmission with two driving modes, sport and auto. Select ‘sport’ and the gear ratios are held to 6500rpm before the added ‘blip’ effect when down shifting.
It’s light and fast; with a total weight of just 1175 kilograms, this unusual looking coupe can sprint from 0-100km/h in a reasonably rapid 4.5 seconds. Top speed is 273km/h.
Inside the cockpit there’s a great view across the coupe’s long split-side bonnet, while the bespoke shape of the rear end allows for clear vision. Ash hardwood that surrounds the dash and door trim can be hand rubbed in your choice of colour. The leather trim is stitched using twin needles and uses suede effect inserts on the heavily bolstered bucket seats for additional comfort.
