Hyundai i-oniq: hybrid sports hatch concept revealed

The first image of the Hyundai i-oniq concept has been released ahead of its 2012 Geneva motor show debut, revealing a vision of the South Korean brand’s future design and technology.
Hyundai says the i-oniq concept is another expression of its ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language, though the coupe-style has cleaner surfaces than current Hyundai production models such as the ix35 SUV and i45 sedan.
The Hyundai i-oniq concept also previews a possible future drivetrain for the company, with the sports hatch using a combination of lithium-ion electric motor and 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine.
Hyundai says the i-oniq is good for 120km in electric mode, with the range extended to 700km with assistance from the internal combustion engine. Emissions, as a result, are just 45 grams of CO2 per kilometre.
At 4.4 metres long, the Hyundai i-oniq sits between a VW Golf and Mazda3 in size. The interior accommodates four people  but with the cabin focus biased towards the driver. Hyundai, however, says passengers are treated to “lounge-style space” in an interior featuring sculpted surfaces apparently inspired by musical instruments.
Hyundai intriguingly describes the concept’s top as a ‘penthouse roof’.
“The i-oniq concept has been created to reflect the new thinking that runs through the Hyundai brand,” senior vice president and COO of Hyundai Motor Europe, Allan Rushforth, said. “It has a bold design, inside and out, that provokes contemplation on the future of automotive possibilities, and a powertrain that highlights one of the ways in which we could power future products – wrapped in a package that exudes premium qualities.”
